Indonesia’s Mt. Marapi Erupts, 11 Killed

Durian. Volcano Mount Marapi, situated in Indonesia’s West Sumatra, has erupted since Sunday afternoon and continued until Monday, killing at least 11 climbers, the provincial branch of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed.

There were estimated 75 climbers in the mountain when the eruption took place on Sunday afternoon. As of early Monday morning,  49 climbers have been found in which eight of them had been sent to two hospitals for treatment due to burnt injured and fractured.

“As of 07.1oam western Indonesia time. the joint search and rescue team has found three more survivors and 11 bodies. The evacuation of those bodies are ongoing… There are 12 others (climbers) must be searched,” Abdul Malik, head of Padang’s Search and Rescue Office said.

The evacuation process must be halt when more eruptions occurred at around 10am.

Before evening, only three bodies have been evacuated to hospital. The search and rescue will continue when the eruptions stop.***
