Two Indonesia’s Female Mountain Climbers Died After Reaching Carstensz Summit

Durian. Two Indonesia’s female mountain climbers – Lilie Wijayanti (59) and Elsa Laksono (59) – died on their way back from Carstensz Summit or Puncak Jaya at 4,884 meter above the sea level in Jayawijaya Mountains on Indonesia’s Central Papua Province on Saturday, 1 March 2025, due to acute mountain sickness.

According to Antara news agency on Sunday, the two climbers had reached the summit of Carstensz on 28 February, however  they faced bad weather on their way back to Yellow Valley basecamp and cause the death.

Lilie and Elsa met during their school years as senior high school students in Malang, East Java. Lilie has reached all of Indonesia’s top seven summits, including Carstensz Summit or Carstensz Pyramid, that is also among the world’s top 7 summits,  before her passing, according to one of an Indonesian female climber Handewi P. Tiwa, who knows the victim through her Facebook account .

Three other climbers in their team are survived, but in critical condition, according to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

The survivors were carried to hospital in Timika, while as of Sunday afternoon local time one casualty was managed to be evacuated by helicopter to Timika.

The evacuation on Sunday was held and will be continued on Monday due to bad weather. (***)
