Indonesians Grief For The Death of 53 Navy Soldiers And Top Intelligence Chief

Durian. Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Apr.26 made national statements related to the nation grief over the death of its 53 Navy soldiers mostly submariners from KRI Nanggala-402 that was sunk in the waters near Bali Island and the killing of Papua provincial intelligence chief in an ambush.

Submarine KRI Nanggala-402 was lost contact with shore on Apr.21 in the middle of tornado launch drill at Bali waters with 53 people onboard — 49 crews and four other Navy officials. The submarine was declared sunk to about 800 depth to the seabed on Apr.24.

On Apr.25, following the clear images and objects found in the sea belong to the West German-made submarine, Indonesian Military (TNI)  Commander Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto confirmed that all Navy personnel onboard KRI Nanggala-402 have died due to the proofs.

According to Indonesian Navy Commander Admiral Yudo Margono explained in a press conference on Apr.25 in Bali that the submarines had cracked into three pieces.

“On behalf of the government and the people of Indonesia, I convey the deepest condolences for the death of 53 Navy soldiers onboard [submarine] KRI Nanggala-402 while on duty in northern part off Bali [Island]. They’re the best sons of the nation, the best patriots whom guarding the country…May the their soul the soldiers will get the best place beside God Almighty,” President Joko Widodo said in an official media statement on Apr.26 accompanied by Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, TNI Commander Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, the National Police (Polri) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Chief of the Sate Intelligence Agency (BIN) Budi Gunawan.

The late soldiers will get honorary stars and one level promotion each, the president said. Their children will be granted free education until complete their bachelor degrees.

President also thanked all parties involved in search and rescue operation for KRI Nanggala-402 including foreign countries.

At the same time, the President also conveyed the nation deepest condolences to the killing of Papua provincial Intelligence Agency Chief Brig.Gen. I Gusti Putu Danny Nugraha on Apr.25 during an ambush of a civilian armed group in Puncak Jaya.

“The state will award him with one level of promotion for his dedication, services and sacrifices of Brig.Gen. I Gusti Putu Danny,” President Widodo said.

His body has arrived in Jakarta on Apr.26 evening and is expected to be cremated in Hindu ceremony before buried at Jakarta Hero Cemetery in South Jakarta.

“I have order TNI Commander and Polri Chief to keep hunting and arresting all members of KKB [criminal armed group]. I underline, there is no place for criminal armed groups in Papua and all over the country,” he stressed.
