Indonesia’s Jokowi Asks Ex Rival Prabowo to Join Govt.

Durian. A day after presidential inauguration, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, popular known as Jokowi, started introducing expected cabinet members on Oct.21, including former contender on 2019 presidential election Prabowo Subianto.

Several of expected cabinet members were invited to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

They were former chief Constitutional Court Judge Mahfud MD, Golkar Party chairman Airlangga Hertarto, founder of Gojek, a ride-hailing app, Nadiem Makarim, businessman Erick Tohir and Wisnuthama, Prabowo Subianto and Edhy Prabowo.

Prabowo is chairman of the  Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). He run the April 2019 presidential race but lost to Jokowi.

The election has divided the country into two fractions until the two leaders reconciliation meetings in July and in October.

In the last meeting with Jokowi in early Oct., Prabowo has given a sign about possibility for Gerindra to be in the government if it is needed.

“We were asked [by the president] to strengthen his cabinet…we have agreed to help…I was asked to help him handling defence sector…I  work hard to achieve determined targets and expectations,” Prabowo said after meeting the president on Oct.21.

He met President Jokowi with a Gerindra politician Edhy Prabowo who is former head of Commission IV at the House of Representatives period 2014-2019. The Commission was overseeing agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Prabowo confirmed that Gerindra will have two seats at the upcoming cabinet.

Meanwhile, Airlangga confirmed that official announcement of the new cabinet composition will be announced by President Jokowi on Oct.23.

Airlangga gave signal that he was asked to work in economy sector.

Meanwhile, Gojek on Oct.21 announced Nadiem resignation from the company.
