Politics:
The country held simultaneous regional elections in 17 provinces on June 27 peacefully.
In August, incumbent President Joko Widodo officially announced to compete for second term in 2019 presidential election with then chairman of the Ulemas Council (MUI) Ma’ruf Amien as his running mate.
In August, chairman of Gerindra Prabowo Subianto announced that he will race in the next year presidential election with young businessman Sandiaga Uno as the running mate.
The crowd of thousands gathered at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Dec.2 for a “reunion” of similar gathering in 2016 to demand the arrest of then Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok for blasphemy
Economy:
Indonesia hosted IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bali in October in which more than 36,000 participants were attended.
Still on October, Indonesia hosted Our Ocean Conference (OOC) that booked 287 new commitments related to marine protection efforts, worth $10.7 billion. The event was taken place in Bali.
In early November, Indonesia as the initiator, hosted the world’s first creative economy conference (WCCE) in Bali.
Indonesia’s Rupiah continued weakening and reached its lowest level since 1998 for a couple of months. In November it was slightly rebounded.
Sports:
It hosted the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, in August. The host country seized fourth place by winning 31 gold, 24 silver, and 43 bronze.
In October, the country hosted the 2018 Asian Para Games, which it managed to earn 37 gold, 47 silver and 51 bronze, which made it at the fourth place of the medal tally.
Indonesian Football Association PSSI in October punished West Java’s Persib Bandung to play out of Java Island until the end of 2018 without supporters after the death a supporter of its opponent Persija Jakarta during the two clubs match in Bandung in September.
Disasters:
In January, malnutrition and measles have affected hundreds of children in Papua
In late July and early of August, three major earthquakes hit Indonesia’s Lombok Island, destroyed infrastructures, buildings and killed almost 500 people.
A powerful earthquake with magnitude 7.4 has hit Central Sulawesi on Sept.28, triggered tsunami and its coastal areas, liquefactions and landslides. More than 2,000 people have died besides infrastructure destruction.
Lion Air JT-610 crashed into Java Sea on October, killing all 189 people who were onboard.
At the end of 2018, tsunami has stroked Sunda Straits, affected coast areas in Banten on Java Island and Lampung on Sumatra Island. More than 400 people have died due to the disaster. The cause of the disaster is still unclear.
Security:
On May 8, a prison riot broke up in the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Depok, West Java, which five police officers were killed by terrorism convicts. One of inmates was killed as well.
The prison riot was followed by a series of suicide church bombings on May 13 in Surabaya, East Java where bombs were carried by members of a family, members of Islamic State-affiliated group, Jemaah Anshaurut Daulah (JAD).
Following the church bombings, several attacks including a failure-suicide bombing plot to police offices in Surabaya and in Pekanbaru, Riau.
About 30 construction workers whom were working on Trans Papua road link, were hostage by a group of gunmen, dozens of them were later killed.
