Durian. About 500 students from various universities in Solo, Central Java gathered on Oct.24 night City Hall joined traditional welcoming ceremony called as Kulanuwun which a procession for new guests in a place.
Those students are originally coming from other cities and areas, out of Solo to continue their advance studies.
The event was organized by Putra Ibu Pertiwi (PIP) group in cooperation with Solo municipal and Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace.
In the procession, students sang kulanuwun, or please excuse me, norm among Indonesians when entering a new location in Javanese language, while Deputy Solo Mayor Purnomo replied by singing monggo, or please, you are welcome.
The ritual continued as students stepped into a house, a tradition from Ende in Flores Island, Easy Nusa Tenggara that is called Lio Ja tradition.
Later they all together sang the national anthem Indonesia Raya.
Representative of their parents finally handed over their children to the people of Solo to be accepted when they are studying and living in the city.
Others traditional performances were showed including puppet show.
