Durian. The Indonesian National Police or Polri has uncovered a people smuggling network, using student internship scheme to do the crime, conflducting in Germany.
Over a thousands students from various universities in Indonesia were sent to Germany to participate in ferienjob, a part time or internship program, but the students faced harsh labor there, wich police suspect the scheme as part of people smuggling acts, according to Director of General Crimes of Polri Brig. Gen. Djuhandhani Rahardjo Puro in Jakarta on Wednesday, 20 March.
Police started investigating the issue after receiving reports from four students who joined the scheme.
“There were 1,047 students sending to Germany through three agencies, ” he said.
There are at least 33 universities that sent their students to Germany for the internship program.
The victims participated in ferienjob in Germany for three months between October and December 2023.
Police declared five suspects – ER (39), A (37), SS (65), AJ (52) and MZ (60) – in this people smuggling case, suspecting them have violated Indonesia’s anti-people smuggling law with maximum penalty of 15 years of imprisonment and fine of 600 million rupiah. (***)
