Durian. Indonesia will carry the main theme which is “Advancing Sustainable Peace” when resume its second turn of presidency at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in August this year, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in Jakarta on July 16.
Indonesia is currently a non-permanent member at the UNSC for period 2019-20.
“Indonesia will advance three main messages during its presidency at the United Nations Security Council,” she said.
Minister Marsudi said the three messages are uniting the UNSC by bridging the interest of major powers and fostering dialog to collectively mitigate covid-19 that poses challenges and international peace and security, advancing sustainable peace in the post pandemic world to not only expedite efforts for economic recovery but also ensure synergy between peace and sustainable development, and advancing global efforts to address emerging security challenges during the pandemic particularly cyber security and terrorism attacking critical health infrastructure.
She explained that there will be 14 meetings which related to conflict situation including Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Guinea-Bissau, North Korea and strategic report on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Some signature events to be held in August during Indonesia’s presidency at the UNSC which including on pandemic and sustaining peace, linkage between counter terrorism and organized crimes and cyber security threats to critical civilian infrastructure.
Marsudi said the meeting on cyber security threats to critical civilian infrastructure is important because of the rising of threat during covid-19 pandemic such as to hospitals and airports.
“Indonesia will initiate a draft document of the UNSC on combating terrorism on persecution, rehabilitation and reintegration or we call it PRR,” the Indonesian diplomat said.
Indonesia’s first presidency at the UNSC was in January 2019.
