“Safeguarding the oceans for future generations is a responsibility and a matter of global urgency and OOC 2019 will highlight the importance of knowledge as the basis of policies and actions to ensure marine protection, responsible management of marine resources and sustainable future economic growth,” said Dwi Budi Sutrisno from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Another important issue for Indonesia to bring to the table is the country’s commitment to reduce plastic waste in the ocean.

Indonesia is committed to reducing plastic waste in the ocean to 70 percent by 2025, according to spokesperson of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Yan Prastomo Ardi.

Data from the Indonesian Plastic Industry Association (INAPLAS) and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) show that plastic waste in Indonesia reaches 64 million tons per year. As many as 3.2 million tons of them were thrown into the sea.

Indonesia hosted Our Ocean Conference in Nusa Dua, Bali last year. More than 1,900 representatives from 70 countries including from non-governmental organizations and private sectors attended the event.
