Durian. Indonesian government expressed its commitment at 2019 Our Ocean Conference (OOC) to reduce 70 percent of its marine plastic waste by 2025, an official said.
The country of about 270 million people is recorded as the world’s second largest country that dumps its plastic waste to the seas after China.
Data from Indonesia’s Plastic Industry Association (Inaplas) and its State Statistic Agency (BPS) show that the country contributed to 64 million tons of plastic waste last year in which 3.2 million tons of them were dumping to the seas.
About 70 percent of world’s plastic waste is potentially sent to Indonesia considering the archipelagic country contains of waters.
The World Bank data in 2018 confirmed that 87 percent of cities in the coastal areas of Indonesia have contributed to marine plastic waste.
“Indonesian government is serious in handling plastic waste in the country’s waters. The proof of it was showed by government efforts to clean marine plastic waste through its national action planning. Through the national action planning, [marine plastic] waste is hoped to be maintained gradually,” Yan Prastomo Ardi, spokesman of sea transportation directorate general at the Transportation Ministry said on Oct. 24 in Oslo, Norway where this year OOC is held.
He said many regional governments in the country have been discussing on implementing the national plan and all stakeholders including civil society is called to join the program.
