Indonesia’s Path to Earn BRICS’ Membership

Durian. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has attended BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6 and 7 of Juli 2025, the first time Indonesia’s leader attending the group’s meeting since its first summit in 2009. At the time it’s only known as BRIC an abbreviation for Brazil, Russia, India and China until South Africa joined the group in September 2010 and the group named BRICS.

Indonesia was offered to join BRICS in 2023 during the leadership of President Joko Widowo, popular as Jokowi, however at the time the country decided to examine the offer.

In 2024, BRICS expanded its membership with additional four countries – Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates and agreed to be called as BRICS+.

Shortly after President Prabowo Subianto took office in 2024, he decided that Indonesia would join BRICS Plus. Only four days after taking office, President Prabowo sent Foreign Minister Sugiono to register Indonesia membership at BRICS+ during the group 16th Summit in Russia.

On 6 January 2025, Brazil announced the acceptance of Indonesia as the new member of BRICS+, making the group is officially having 10 members. Indonesia is the first Southeast Asia country that join BRICS+.

BRICS is recognized as an alternative group, compared to group of seven economic powers or G7 or seen by some as an anti-western group.

BRICS+ has set BRICS’ Development Bank (BDB) and President Prabowo has stated that Indonesia will join the bank.(***)
