Indonesia Summons Malaysian Ambassador Over Migrant Worker Abuse Case

Durian. Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry has summoned Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Zainal Abidin Bakar on Nov.27 to convey its strong condemnation regarding the current migrant worker abuse by Malaysian employer in Kuala Lumpur.

An Indonesian female domestic worker namely M.H. was tortured by her employer and rescued by Malaysian Police on Nov.24 in Kuala Lumpur.

According to data that Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur has gathered, M.H. was torture by using blunt and sharp objects as well was showered by hot water and her Malaysian employer did not give food.

Malaysian Police has rescued the victim and detained the employer. The employer, according to the ministry is alleged for violating Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

“Indonesia demanded fully protection to Indonesian migrant works, close monitoring to employers including the fulfillment of labor rights as well as ensuring firm law enforcement to M.H.’s employer,” the ministry said in a statement on the purpose of the summon.

According to Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia conveyed his concern and surprise for the happening.

Indonesian embassy in Malaysia is providing lawyer to monitor the legal process. M.H. is now in stable condition and still under medical treatment.
