Landslide in Indonesia’s Pekalongan Killing 17, Evacuation Process Continues

Durian. Torrential rains have caused a landslide at Kasimpar Village in Indonesia’s Pekalongan in Central Java Province, claimed 17 lives and nine others are reported missing, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Tuesday, 21 Jan. 2025.

The landslide occurred on Monday afternoon, buried two houses and swapped a number of vehicles that passed the area.

“Total 17 bodies that have been discovered as of  5.30PM western Indonesia’s time on Tuesday. Meanwhile, nine people are reportedly missing,” Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson of the BNPB said in a written statement, adding that 10 survivors are injured and under medical treatments.

He said torrential rains also have triggered floods in nine districts in Pekalongan Regency, wounding two residents and forcing 145 to take refuge in safer locations.

Search and rescue operations are barred by heavy rains and connectivity cut off. And weather forecast showed that in the next few days, rains with medium to high intensity will pour in Pekalongan.

The landslide and floods also damaged transportation infrastructures, public facilities and houses. (***)
