Indonesian President Joko Widodo on July 1 announced his decision to impose emergency status of restrictions on community activities (PPKM) special on Java and Bali Islands, which will be into effect on July 3 to 20. The decision was taken because of rapid spread of delta variant and other variants of coronavirus.
“After receiving inputs from ministers, health experts as well as regional government leaders, I decide to implement emergency PPKM from July 3-20, 2021, specifically on Java and Bali,” President Widodo said.
President Widodo said not only Indonesia who is struggling to overcome the spread of the virus. Indonesia has been accelerating the implementation of its national program on vaccination which the country is targeting 181 million population to have at least one vaccine shot by the end of 2021.
Earlier, President Widodo has said that about 42 million vaccine doses had been injected as of the end of June. The national program was kicked off in August.
Delta variant, first detected in India, has spreading ability faster than alpha variant that was first detected in England. According to the WHO, delta variant has been transmitted to at least 85 countries, including in Indonesia.
