Indonesian Govt. Gives Sentence Cut For Over 12,00 Christian Inmates on Christmas

Durian. Indonesian Penitentiary Department announced on Dec. 25 that 12,629 Christian inmates across the country received sentence cut as Christmas gift for their good behavior during serving their jail terms, in which 166 of them were freely to walk out of prisons.

The correctional unit under the Justice and Human Rights Minister said the remission aims to encourage other inmates to keep perform good behavior. Not only good behavior, the inmates should active in various activities provided by each prison which part of good recommendation to earn the bonus.

Head of Penitentiary Department Sri Puguh Budi Utami hoped the sentence remission can bring more joy to Christian prisoners in Christmas Day.

There are 18,900 Christian inmates now living in various prisons all over Indonesia.

By giving the sentence reduction to 12,629 prisoners, the government can save about 6.3 billion rupiah ($451,000) from their daily meals, another official said.

Indonesian government grants sentence reduction during Independence Day and main religious celebrations. The country has six state religions – Islam, Catholicism, Protestant, Buddha, Hindu and Confusion.
