Child Sumatran Elephant Rescued in Indonesia’s Aceh, Released to Habitat

Durian. Indonesia’s Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Aceh managed to rescue a four-year old male Sumatran Elephant or elephas maximus sumatranus that was tangled up nylon rope in Blang Sukon in Pidie Jaya regency, Aceh on Aug. 15.

BKSDA team consists of personnel from Elephant Training Center Saree, Resort Area 5 Sigli and animal doctor from Wild Animal Study Center at Syiah Kuala University received information from society near where it was tangled up and took immediate efforts to rescue it, the center said in a statement on Aug. 16.

From medical check, doctor found the age of the critically endangered species from International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list. Four years old means it is still a child elephant.

The species is also among protected animals under Indonesian law. It is only can be found on Sumatra Island.

After getting medical treatment for the wounded at its front part of left ankle, doctor ensured that the injured was light and it was fine to release the one ton-weight child elephant to the wild habitat, Agus Arianto, head of BKSDA Aceh said.

He hoped that people who are living near Sumatran Elephant habitat will not destroy forest or try to catch, smuggle and trade the protected animal.
