Durian. Indonesia government through Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Bali in cooperation with civil society group Saba Asri Turtle Preservers Group have rescued about 100 olive ridley turtle nets this year, Indonesian Environment and Forestry Ministry said on Aug.7.
Besides saving the sea turtle nets, they have managed to incubate about 10,000 baby turtles and released them to their natural habitat.
Olive ridley turtle or lepidochelys olivacea has uniqueness of laying its eggs during day light while other species will do it in a quite night.
The oceanic turtle inhabit in Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans that have warm stream. Olive ridley turtle or penyu lekang in Indonesian is protected under Indonesian 1980 regulation issued by the Agriculture Ministry as an endanger animal.
“Based on concern of the life of turtle, we have started making semi-natural egg incubation to gather its eggs that were moved from origin nets. Then, we made temporary shelters for baby turtles [before released them to the sea],” R. Agus Budi Santoso, head of KSDA Bali in a statement on Aug.7.
He said the cooperation between BKSDA Bali and Saba Asri Turtle Preservers Group was established in 2015 which to oversee the smallest turtle around Saba beach in Gianyar regency, Bali.
Santoso said regional government and Saba residents along with other groups in civil society as well as Bali Zoo support the existing cooperation on protection olive ridley turtles.
