Durian. Pakistan closes border crossings with Afghanistan and Iran due to security reason prior to the country general elections on 8 Feb. 2024
The closure of the border crossings due to the elections was stated by the Pakistani Foreign Affairs Ministry said on 7 Feb. 2024
“To ensure full security during the general elections to be held in Pakistan on 8 Feb. 2024, border crossings with Afghanistan and Iran, would remain closed both for cargo and pedestrians,” the ministry statement published on X stated.
The ministry said that normal operations at the border crossings would resume on 9 Feb. 2024.
There are five candidates will compete for the country’s leadership position. They are former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who is also the son of assassined prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
General elections is taking place from 9a.m. to 5p.m. local time when estimated 128 million voters out of total population of 241 million to cast their ballot papers.
Voters will also elect their legislative and representative for the national assembly candidates from national to regional levels. (***)
